What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

A fandom term, originating in the X-Files fandom, for a fan who prefers a particular pair of characters to stay platonic and does not want a romantic relationship between them, both in how canon is read and in fan fiction.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"She is a Noromo, so she reads every Mulder and Scully scene as a partnership between colleagues."

LORE & ORIGIN

Fanlore documents Noromo (also written NoRomo) as an X-Files fandom term for fans who preferred the relationship between Mulder and Scully to be platonic; it lists anti-shipper as a synonym. It is described as replacing the older label NaXis ("Not A Kiss In Sight"), which had been coined by shippers; a 1999 fan quoted by Fanlore says the name NoRomo was devised by noromos themselves, who found NaXis derogatory and disliked "non-shipper" and "antishipper" because those labels suggested opposition to the characters' bond rather than to the romance. Fan sites such as Noromo Values (created November 1998) and a webring called Noromos at Random existed in this period. The term names a preference about a pairing and is not a judgment of the fans involved.
