MICROCELEBRITY— ORIGIN, MEANING & USAGE

Microcelebrity A person who is well known within a small, niche online audience rather than the general public, and who often cultivates a public persona and a close, fan-like relationship with followers.

Origin:The term is credited to researcher Theresa Senft, who used it in her 2008 book Camgirls to describe people "amping up" their popularity online through video, blogs and social networking. Alice Marwick and danah boyd (2011) later defined micro-celebrity as a self-presentation technique in which people treat themselves as a public persona, use strategic intimacy and regard their audience as fans. Marwick later described it as a practice rather than a fixed level of fame. The related behaviours predate the book, for example early webcam broadcasts of the 1990s.
