TPTB An initialism for "the powers that be", meaning whoever holds authority or control, such as a government, a company's management, or the people running a show or community. Online it is often used with a satirical or conspiratorial tone, for example for the producers of a TV series or the moderators of a forum.

Origin:The phrase comes from William Tyndale's 1526 English translation of Romans 13:1 and was kept in the 1611 King James Bible. Wiktionary lists TPTB as a plural-only initialism. A researcher's compilation of citations finds the form TPTB in a 1965 MIT publication, in a 1990 CompuServe book, and in a May 31, 1991 rec.arts.startrek Usenet FAQ that defined it as the powers that be, usually meaning the show's producers; it became more common than PTB as 1990s online forums grew.
