What Is Discredited Trope?
3.5BRAINROT SCOREDiscredited Trope A storytelling convention that audiences or creators now widely regard as implausible, outdated or no longer workable, so that using it straight tends to read as naive unless it is lampshaded or reworked.
Origin:The phrase is TV Tropes vocabulary. Wikipedia describes a trope as a recurring element of a genre that can become a cliché when overused, and Wiktionary notes the word "trope" is not necessarily pejorative; "discredited" marks the case where a convention has lost credibility. Which tropes count as discredited is a matter of opinion and changes over time. No dated first use of the exact phrase is documented. Related ideas are trope decay (a trope changing meaning) and lampshade (drawing attention to a convention).
