What Is Gary Stu?

6.0BRAINROT SCORE

Gary Stu The male-gender counterpart to 'Mary Sue' — an idealized, overly competent, wish-fulfillment original or self-insert male character. Terminology for the male variant has never been as standardized as for Mary Sue; 'Marty Stu' is arguably the more frequently used variant, with 'Gary Stu' (and 'Gary Sue,' 'Larry Sue') simply common alternates.

Origin:'Mary Sue' itself originated in 1973 via Paula Smith's parody 'A Trekkie's Tale' in the Star Trek fanzine Menagerie #2. The male variants developed later as community-invented labels rather than from a single coiner.
First Seen:1980
Peak Era:ongoing fandom-critique vocabulary, no sharp peak
Aura Impact:+1 Aura (self-aware Gary Stu written as parody) / -2 Aura (writing an unintentional Gary Stu and not seeing it)

EXAMPLE USAGE

"The OC could win any fight, romance any character, and never made a mistake — classic Gary Stu."
