Origin:Originally a neutral social theory term (gatekeeper = information flow controller). Internet culture reloaded it as a negative verb circa 2019. By 2021 it was being ironically reclaimed — 'I should have gatekept this' became a eulogy for any subculture that went too mainstream and lost its identity in the process.
