Fandom historians, including Kristina Busse's 2013 academic essay and Fanlore's Alpha/Beta/Omega page, stress it is a synthesis of older threads: Star Trek's Vulcan 'pon farr' mating-cycle concept, the existing 1980s mpreg tradition, werewolf/shifter pack-hierarchy fiction (including Patricia Briggs' published, non-fanfic alpha/beta/omega werewolf novels from the 1990s-2000s), and general late-2000s fandom AU/kink-meme culture.
