What Does This Mean?
Fandom slang for the overlap of academia and fandom: the community of academics who are also fans, or the practice of studying fandom while taking part in it. It derives from acafan, an academic who identifies as a member of fandom.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Her panel on acafandom covered how scholars balance fan identity with citation rules.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wiktionary defines acafan as an academic who identifies as a member of fandom, a blend of academic and fan, with citations from 2012 onward and a 2017 source that uses 'acafandom'. Wikipedia traces fan studies to Henry Jenkins' 1992 book Textual Poachers; no earlier dated source for the 'acafandom' form itself was found yet.
