XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ ACRONYM ][ REDDIT_FORMAT ]

Acronym for "Am I The Asshole?", the Reddit-born format (and now general internet slang) where someone describes a personal conflict in detail and asks the community to render a verdict on who was in the wrong.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"AITA for telling my roommate her cooking smells wake me up at 2am?"

LORE & ORIGIN

The format comes from r/AmItheAsshole, a subreddit launched on Reddit on June 8, 2013 by Marc Beaulac after a workplace debate about office thermostat settings; "AITA" appears in the subreddit's earliest posts as shorthand for the question it's built around. The subreddit grew steadily, passing 1 million subscribers by July 2019 and now sitting around 12.7 million, and its verdict format (judgments like "YTA"/"NTA") spread well beyond Reddit itself, getting quoted on TikTok, Twitter/X, and in everyday conversation as a general way to ask whether one was in the wrong in any dispute.
