What Does This Mean?
On Tumblr, a question sent to a blog anonymously through its ask box. Tumblr only allows the receiving blog to answer an anonymous ask publicly, since the sender's identity is hidden.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""An anon ask came in asking which character I would save first, so I answered it publicly.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Tumblr's help center explains that logged-in users can send an ask either as themselves or anonymously, if the receiving blog has turned on "Allow anonymous questions". Anonymous asks can only be answered publicly, senders are limited to 10 asks per hour with at most 5 anonymous, and blocking an anonymous ask blocks the sender's IP address. "Anon ask" is the shorthand for this feature and for the message itself. No dated first use of the shorthand is documented. It is the anonymous variant of an ask sent through the ask box, and the sender is often called an anon.
