What Does This Mean?
Brazilian Portuguese gaming slang for someone or something that plays unfairly: a player who uses dishonest or cheap tactics to win, and by extension a character, weapon or strategy so strong that the opponent has almost no chance to respond. It is the augmentative of apelo, from the verb apelar.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Esse personagem é apelão demais, o adversário nem consegue reagir."
LORE & ORIGIN
Dicio lists apelão as slang for a person who uses dishonest means to win a game, and explains it as the augmentative of apelo, from the verb apelar. Brazilian gaming media apply it to characters and tactics that are too strong, for example in lists of the most apelão characters in games, where it describes something that leaves the opponent no chance of recovery. The word is built from ordinary Portuguese vocabulary rather than borrowed from English; the nearest English idea for characters and options is "overpowered". The first gaming use of apelão is not documented.
