What Does This Mean?
Spanish term for a follower of the fast, repetitive electronic dance music and club scene known as bakalao, and for that music itself. Today it is mostly used with a pejorative edge, as a label for a dated or crude club style.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"The older cousins still joke about their "bakala" nights on the Valencia club circuit."
LORE & ORIGIN
Spanish Wikipedia's article on the Ruta del bakalao (also called Ruta Destroy) describes a nightlife movement of thousands of young people moving between clubs in the Valencia metropolitan area, especially along the El Saler road, growing in the 1980s and first half of the 1990s, peaking in 1991-1993 and declining from 1994-1996. It says the fast, simple electronic music and its followers were called "bakala" or "bakalao", and that the term is today used only in a derogatory way. "Makina" refers to the harder, faster later phase of the music. No dated first use of the exact form "bakala" is given there.
