[ PRESENCE MACHINES ][ MACHINE CULTURE ]

FORCE: Machine CultureUNIVERSE: IM and MySpace CultureCLUSTER: Presence Machines

AIM's contact list feature showing which of a user's friends were currently online, one of the earliest visible presence indicators that made a friend's availability a real-time, glanceable piece of information.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"The buddy list sign-on sound is instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up on AIM."

LORE & ORIGIN

Built into AOL Instant Messenger from its 1997 launch, the buddy list established the basic visible-presence pattern that every subsequent messaging and social platform's contact list would inherit.
