What Does This Mean?
Keeping a price chart open and checking it over and over, often with no open position and no plan to act. In trading communities it describes a compulsive habit that is said to feed anxiety and impulsive decisions.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"He swore he was done with chart watching, then spent the whole night refreshing the five-minute candles."
LORE & ORIGIN
The phrase is a plain compound of chart and watching, used in trading blogs and idea posts for the habit of continuous monitoring, including titles such as one TradingView post on the burden of continuous chart watching. A trader's blog of November 2025 describes the same behavior under other words, as a dopamine-driven loop in which looking at charts feels rewarding even when there is nothing to do, and suggests scheduled checks, alerts and automatic stop orders instead. These are practitioner opinions, not research findings. It differs from chartposting, which is about making charts as jokes, and from chart is cooked, which is a verdict on a collapsed chart. No dated first use is documented.
