What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]
FORCE: Gen Z BrainrotUNIVERSE: GamingCLUSTER: gaming_terms

Gaming slang, as a verb or an uncountable noun, for winning with a cheap, unintended or controversial tactic, such as exploiting a quirk of the game or an AI, instead of playing the challenge the way it was designed. In real-time strategy it can also mean an unconventional all-in strategy meant to surprise an opponent early.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""He cheesed the boss by standing on a ledge where it could not reach him.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary lists two gaming senses: exploiting an unintentional game mechanic (noun), and using a controversial or unsporting tactic or an all-in surprise strategy (verb, especially real-time strategy). Its dated citations include a 1993 Usenet post on alt.games.sf2 using "cheesing" for cheap tactics, and the 2008 MIT Press book The Ecology of Games describing "cheesing" as unexpected play that led to accusations of cheating. The etymology of the word in this sense is not given in the sources opened. Whether a given tactic counts as cheese is often disputed by players.
