What Does This Mean?
An AI agent, usually built on a large language model, that works on software tasks such as writing code, debugging, testing and documentation, often by running tools in a developer's project. In developer slang it names the tool you hand a task to, as opposed to an autocomplete assistant.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""She gave the coding agent the failing test and went to make tea.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's agentic coding article describes coding agents as AI agents, typically LLM-based, that help developers with tasks such as writing, debugging, testing and documenting code, lists tools such as Claude Code, Devin and Codex, and relates the idea to vibe coding. The page does not give a dated first use of the phrase "coding agent". The existing entries on agentic coding and vibe coding cover the workflow and its attitude; this entry names the tool itself.
