The name evokes drug-like intensity, as if the author was 'riding a high,' describing the fic's addictive appeal to readers — not a 'cranking the story out fast' production idiom. There is no single fixed origin date; the concept and term evolved organically in fandom, and Fanlore's definition was formally updated as recently as September 2017. What counts as 'crack' is fandom-relative, since a canon with more inherent absurdity sets a higher bar for what reads as crack.
