What Does This Mean?
Spanish term for a social-media account that copies another person's or brand's profile (name, photo, content) to pass itself off as the original. Consumer-protection advice describes clones of popular accounts and of friends' or relatives' accounts used for fake giveaways, requests for money or malicious links. It differs from "cuenta secundaria", an openly kept second account of the same owner.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"«Cuidado, esa es una cuenta clon: la mía es la oficial», avisó la creadora a sus seguidores."
LORE & ORIGIN
INCIBE, the Spanish national cybersecurity institute (5 Feb 2021), describes fake profiles built from information found online and cloned accounts almost identical to an official one, sometimes differing by one character, and advises being wary of unknown requests, confirming with the person through another channel, reporting the profile to the platform and keeping screenshots. The shorter label "cuenta clon" is not yet documented in dictionaries.
