What Does This Mean?
Fan fiction about ordinary domestic life, typically a couple shopping for curtains and building a home together, with little or no drama.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"It is pure curtain fic: two hours in a furniture store and one argument about a sofa."
LORE & ORIGIN
Fanlore defines curtainfic as fan fiction focused on domestic tranquility, taking its name from the image of a romantic pairing "shopping for curtains", literally or figuratively. It is often fluff with little or no drama, is usually romantic, and is sometimes treated as a slash-specific trope, though the term has also been applied to gen fic. It overlaps with domestic fic and with kidfic, and a subset set in contemporary times is called Ikea fic, in which characters shop for furniture and struggle to assemble it. Fanlore notes the first use of the idea was probably in a zine and gives 1998 as the earliest online example it found. Critics sometimes call such stories out of character when they feature characters who show little interest in domesticity in canon.
