What Does This Mean?

cybersquatting

Brainrot Score: 3.6 ⓘOBSERVED
[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

Registering or using an internet domain name in bad faith to profit from someone else's trademark or name, for example by reselling the domain to the trademark owner. Also called domain squatting.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""The company paid to recover the name from a cybersquatter who had registered it years earlier.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wikipedia says the term comes from "squatting" (occupying something one does not own) and notes that usage varies on whether domain warehousing counts. WIPO defined it in a 1999 report as abusive domain registration, and 1999 also saw the start of the UDRP dispute process and the United States Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act.
