What Does This Mean?
To switch off a social media account so that it is hidden or inactive, either briefly or for good, usually after a fight, a break or a wish to leave a platform. People often announce it with a farewell post. Platforms usually distinguish it from fully deleting the account.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""He deactivated after the argument, then reactivated two days later.""
LORE & ORIGIN
This is an ordinary technical word with no documented slang coinage, so the entry is weak and kept short. Wikipedia's account (computing) article describes a user account as the way a person is authenticated to a system, and does not discuss deactivation. Its Tumblr article also does not address deactivating accounts. No dated first use of the social-media sense is documented in the pages opened. The existing entries on throwaway and burner accounts cover other ways people handle accounts.
