XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

To remove a user's voice status in an IRC channel, so that in a moderated channel the user can no longer speak; the verb for the channel mode change -v.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"The operator devoiced him until the argument cooled down."

LORE & ORIGIN

A term from Internet Relay Chat (IRC). "Voice" (mode +v) is a per-user channel status that lets a person speak in a moderated channel (mode +m), and "devoice" means taking it away with -v, usually through the command /mode #channel -v nickname or a client shortcut such as /devoice. It leaves operator status, if any, untouched and does not remove the user from the channel. Operators on networks with channel services can also do it through the service bot. The first use of the word is not documented.
