What Does This Mean?
A mocking nickname for the Canadian games journalist and show host Geoff Keighley, from a 2012 interview staged among Mountain Dew and Doritos branding. It became shorthand for heavy product placement in games media.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The sponsor logos were so thick on stage that the comments started calling the host the Dorito Pope.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Know Your Meme dates the interview with LevelSave.com to October 18, 2012, tied to a Mtn Dew and Doritos Halo 4 promotion. The Eurogamer article "Lost Humanity 18: A Table of Doritos" followed on October 24, 2012, starting the controversy often called Doritosgate, and edited images (including a Doritos-chip papal crown) spread afterward. Keighley has said he hopes to be known for more than the joke.
