What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Brazilian Portuguese gamer slang, from the English "to dupe": to duplicate items or currency in an online game by using a bug or exploit, as in "dupar item" or "dupar dinheiro". It is generally treated as cheating because it inflates the in-game economy, and developers usually patch the bug and may penalise the accounts involved. The label describes the community practice only.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""Corrigiram o bug que deixava dupar item raro, agora o mercado vai se ajeitar.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Portuguese -ar verb built on the English gaming term "duping", defined by Wikipedia as using a bug to illegitimately create copies of unique items or currency in persistent online games (examples there include RuneScape in November 2003 and EverQuest II in 2005). Brazilian press uses the same idea: Critical Hits (26 Mar 2020) reports that patch 1.1.1 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons removed a bug that let players duplicate valuable items. The pages opened do not date the Portuguese verb itself.
