LORE & ORIGIN

Modeled on エアギター ("air guitar," pretending to play guitar without one), which extended into "エアプレイ/エアプレイヤー" ("air-play/air-player") and was then clipped down to エアプ (eapu) — not a standalone coinage. It's more contemporary gaming/fandom slang than classic 2ch-era slang.
