What Does This Mean?
Brazilian Portuguese gamer expression for a gold farmer, a player or worker who plays an online game mainly to collect in-game currency or items that are then sold for real money, with "chinês" attached because much of that work was concentrated in China. Scholars note that the label carries a stereotype: in Western gaming communities the "Chinese farmer" became a racialized figure, so the term can be used as an insult toward Chinese players. It is described here as a documented stereotype, without endorsement.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Tem muito bot e farmer chinês nesse servidor, o preço do item despencou.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Calque of the English "Chinese farmer". Wikipedia (Gold farming) defines the practice as playing an MMO to acquire in-game currency that is sold for real money, which most operators prohibit; it says 80-85% of gold farmers were in China by 2005/2006 data, that the practice grew quickly around 2004, and that this concentration led to prejudice towards Chinese players, with media scholar Lisa Nakamura arguing that the style of play became racialized as Chinese. The Brazilian site Ovicio (26 May 2011) explains "farmar gold" for a Brazilian audience in a report on prisoners forced to do it. The pages opened do not date the Portuguese phrase "farmer chinês" itself.
