LORE & ORIGIN

"Friki" is a Spanish adaptation of English "freak" (and "freaky"), a word that once labelled people exhibited in freak shows. According to Spanish Wikipedia, in Spain from the mid-2000s it was applied to eccentric television personalities and later to anyone with an intense interest in a niche subject. The Real Academia Española added "friki" to its dictionary in 2012, including the sense of a person who practises a hobby excessively and obsessively. "Frikismo" or "cultura friki" names the culture itself, and the same source notes that frikismo comes in degrees, from a simple hobby to a way of life. Online reports date the first Día del Orgullo Friki to 2006, held every 25 May.
