Grew out of the "expanding brain" meme template that spread on 4chan and Twitter starting around 2017, where a sequence of brain images escalates from a small, dim brain (a normal, sensible take) to a glowing, galaxy-filled brain (an absurdly convoluted or contrarian take framed as the most enlightened option). "Galaxy brain" became shorthand on its own for that specific brand of faux-genius reasoning, often used sarcastically to dunk on someone's take.
