LORE & ORIGIN

Know Your Meme says Reddit Gold, the first award, launched around July 9, 2010 as a subscription, became a gift-based award, and was rebranded in August 2018 when Reddit Premium arrived; the phrase "Edit: Thanks for the Gold, kind stranger!" became a stock joke by around 2017. Wikipedia adds that the coin and award system was discontinued in 2023 and later returned in a new form.
