What Does This Mean?
A marketing approach, born in startups, that chases fast user or audience growth through constant small experiments such as A/B tests. In creator circles the phrase is also used loosely for any trick to gain followers quickly, and critics say it is repackaged ordinary marketing.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The founder called it growth hacking; the team called it running a lot of small tests.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia says growth hacking is a subfield of marketing focused on rapid company growth, run through regular experiments by teams of marketers, developers and product managers, and that Sean Ellis coined "growth hacker" in 2010 with Andrew Chen later popularizing it. A 2013 Fast Company article by Ryan Holiday, cited on Wiktionary, also attributes the term to Ellis. Wikipedia reports the criticism that people see growth hacking as copying famous tactics, and carries maintenance tags about unverified claims. This entry describes the practice only and gives no method.
