What Does This Mean?
A fandom and TV Tropes term for the cartoon-art convention of drawing female characters with very wide hips, usually paired with a narrow waist and a small bust and shoulders. The name is a neutral description of a drawing style and is used in discussions of character design.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""A video essay compared Hartman Hips across several cartoon studios' character designs.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wiktionary says TV Tropes coined the term in 2008 and named it for the animator Butch Hartman, who drew exaggerated figures in The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. Some fans argue the look is better tied to other artists such as Stephen Silver, so the name is the site's convention rather than a settled attribution.
