What Does This Mean?
Crypto slang for stubbornly holding onto a cryptocurrency rather than selling it, especially through a price crash, instead of trying to trade or panic-sell.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Bitcoin dropped 30% overnight but he just said "HODL" and closed his laptop."
LORE & ORIGIN
Coined by accident when BitcoinTalk user "GameKyuubi" posted a rambling, self-described drunk forum thread titled "I AM HODLING" on December 18, 2013, during a sharp Bitcoin price crash. "HODL" started simply as a typo of "hold"; the popular backronym "Hold On for Dear Life" was invented afterward by the community as a joke reinterpretation, not the original reason for the word.
