What Does This Mean?
A Chinese-English mix meaning to keep control, stay composed or handle a situation; "hold" is the English verb with the Chinese resultative 住. It is used for keeping calm in an awkward moment or for coping with a demanding task.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Even when the projector broke mid-presentation, she managed to hold住 the whole room."
LORE & ORIGIN
The expression went viral in August 2011 after a Taiwanese variety-show clip in which a university student, Xie Yilin (nicknamed "Hold住姐"), repeated the line about getting the whole scene under control. A Chinese news report from that month describes how it spread quickly on Weibo. The word 住 is added to the English "hold" in the way Chinese adds it to verbs of grasping or stopping; a Chinese brand later used the hashtag Hold住才有型 for a social campaign.
