LORE & ORIGIN
A June 14, 2024 Substack essay by Lorna Perry traces the trend to a 2017 viral post and the Boyfriends of Instagram account, created in 2017 to share behind-the-scenes clips of men going to great lengths for the shot, and says the #BoyfriendsofInstagram hashtag was still in use seven years later. The essay calls the role unpaid labour and notes that women do it too.
