What Does This Mean?
A genre of side-by-side posts, often tagged #instagramvsreality, that put a heavily edited or posed Instagram photo next to the unedited, real-life version to show how curated feeds can be.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Her Instagram vs reality post showed the same beach photo with and without the lighting and posing.""
LORE & ORIGIN
A December 6, 2019 Psychology Today post by Renee Engeln describes the posts and a study of 305 U.S. women aged 18 to 30. It reports that body dissatisfaction rose for women who saw only edited images and fell for those who saw the contrast pairs or only the real ones, and cautions that many such posts feature women who are already thin and attractive.
