REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""She moved from shoujo to josei once the stories got more grown-up.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wikipedia gives the Japanese name as meaning women's comics, notes the earlier term ladies' comics, and says critics and academics adopted josei in the late 1990s. The category emerged in the 1980s as publishers spun shoujo special issues into magazines for adult readers, such as Be Love and You (1980), Big Comic for Lady (1981) and Young You (1987).
