Accounts of the origin conflict: sources place the group's start anywhere from about 2007 to 2015 and tie it variously to Argentina, Paraguay or Mexico. A community-edited meme wiki ties it to a Facebook page run by a Paraguayan administrator known as Mr. Graso and gives 2013 for the group's creation; another places it in Argentina around 2015 and links the name to the Argentine sense of "grasa" as tacky or cheap, used humorously. No account is confirmed by a dated primary record. A 2020 master's thesis at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia studied the community through online ethnography between 2017 and 2019, covering its history, its way of writing and its memes. The community is known for offensive material, so it is described here only as a cultural reference.
