What Does This Mean?
A group of websites that link to each other mainly to raise their search engine rankings, which search engines treat as a form of spamdexing. Selective link exchanges between relevant sites are not counted as spamdexing by the source, and search engines may filter or remove farm sites.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The site's traffic collapsed after the search engine flagged it as part of a link farm.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's Link farm article describes it as a group of sites that hyperlink to each other to improve search rankings, a form of spamdexing, and says SEOs first built link farms in 1999 to exploit Inktomi's reliance on link popularity, later adapting them to Google's PageRank. It says search engines filter such pages and sometimes remove whole domains, and that in September 2014 Google applied manual ranking penalties to private blog networks. This entry only describes the practice and gives no instructions.
