What Does This Mean?
[ SLANG ][ PSYCHOLOGY ][ INTERNET CULTURE ]
The point at which constant ironic self-reference about being online stops functioning as distance from the behavior and just becomes the behavior itself, with no remaining layer of irony left to retreat to.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"I've said 'I have brainrot' as a joke so many times I genuinely can't tell if I'm joking anymore."
LORE & ORIGIN
Named around 2023 to describe a specific endpoint of meme-fluency: joking about being terminally online was once a way to signal awareness, but at sufficient saturation the joke and the condition become indistinguishable.
