What Does This Mean?

metagame

Brainrot Score: 5.8 ⓘOBSERVED
[ SLANG ][ GAMING ][ COMPETITIVE PLAY ]

In gaming, the conventions of a community and the strategies currently most popular or viable, often shortened to "meta", along with preparation based on them. Playing outside it is called off-meta. In a wider sense, a metagame is a game about games or beyond the game.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""After the patch, the metagame shifted toward fast decks and nobody played the old slow ones.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wikipedia dates the word to 1956 in a publication on zero-sum games and to Nigel Howard's 1966 work on metagame analysis, and says Richard Garfield's 1995 column in The Duelist and 2000 talk brought it into game design. Wiktionary's video-game sense is the conventions of a gaming community, including which characters, weapons and techniques are viable in multiplayer.
