What Does This Mean?
A group loot rule from World of Warcraft: players who actually need an item (for example as an upgrade for their class) get priority over players who want it only to sell, disenchant or collect. It is both an etiquette expected in groups and a named loot setting.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""We run need before greed here, so only roll Need if the gear is a real upgrade.""
LORE & ORIGIN
The Warcraft Wiki describes Need Before Greed as a raid loot setting in which each player picks Need, Transmog, Greed or Pass when a boss dies and the highest priority wins, with a 1-100 roll breaking ties among equal choices. It says that before patch 1.9 players typed "n" or "g" and used /roll by hand, that the setting was removed in patch 8.0.1 (17 July 2018) and re-added in patch 10.0.0 (25 October 2022), and that Transmog was added in patch 10.1.0 (2 May 2023). Wikipedia's glossary of video game terms mentions a related need-or-greed loot method. The phrase is tied to World of Warcraft and games that copied its loot windows.
