LORE & ORIGIN

A PC Componentes article (last updated 4 June 2024) defines "nerfear" as reducing or weakening a game element to balance it and traces it to the Nerf toy brand of foam guns. It uses "nerfeada" for an item already weakened. A Peruvian esports glossary also lists "nerf" as the opposite of "buff" and "nerfeo" for the weakening taken to an extreme. The existing English entry "nerf" covers the English word; this entry covers the Spanish verb ending in -ear and its derived forms. No dated first use is documented.
