LORE & ORIGIN

Wikipedia describes outfit-of-the-day posts as showing clothing, shoes, jewellery and accessories worn on a given day, with videos starting around 2010 and growing popular in 2019; it reports that by 2016 the Instagram hashtag #OOTD had over 80 million posts. Wiktionary lists dated uses from The Atlantic (2021), The Guardian (2023) and the Los Angeles Times (2023), including sorority-recruitment videos. Brands pair the format with influencers and affiliate links, and some fashion writers criticise it for encouraging constant buying.
