LORE & ORIGIN

Know Your Meme traces the reaction GIF to a 2007 YTMND page showing Michael Jackson eating popcorn in a clip from the 1982 "Thriller" video; it reached r/funny in May 2011 as a reply for Facebook arguments, and the r/popcorngif subreddit launched in March 2012. Emojipedia says the popcorn emoji, approved in 2015, is used online to signal following drama.
