What Does This Mean?
A scheme in which an asset's price is artificially inflated through hype or misleading promotion (the "pump"), then sold off by the organizers onto the resulting buyers (the "dump").
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"The influencer shilled the token for a week, then a pump and dump left his followers holding the bag."
LORE & ORIGIN
A much older general-finance and securities-fraud term, tracing back to stock manipulation schemes in the 1920s (including cases involving RCA stock) and notoriously associated with 1990s "boiler room" brokers and dot-com era stock fraud, well before crypto existed. Crypto communities adopted the term later to describe altcoin and token schemes.
