What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

Affectionate meme-speak for a dog, usually a small or young one.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Look at this tiny pupper learning to climb the stairs!"

LORE & ORIGIN

Part of 'DoggoLingo', the cutesy dog dialect that grew out of meme communities in the mid-2010s and was popularized by accounts such as WeRateDogs (created November 2015). A June 2016 Urban Dictionary entry defining 'doggo' as 'a big ol pupper' and a July 2016 copypasta ('a pupper is a doggo') are among the earliest dated mentions Know Your Meme records. Dictionary.com describes 'pupper' as the smaller or younger dog and 'doggo' as the older or larger one. The first use of 'pupper' itself is not documented in the sources checked.
