A subculture within Pepe the Frog meme culture treating specially-crafted, limited, or old-school Pepe images as valuable collectibles — trading-card-style artifacts to hoard, trade, and flex, eventually spawning actual blockchain-based digital-collectible projects.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"That one's a certified Rare Pepe, only a handful ever got made."
LORE & ORIGIN
Emerged around 2015-2016 as 4chan and Reddit users began treating certain Pepe images as rare, collectible artifacts rather than disposable reaction pictures — assigning them mock scarcity, edition numbers, and trading value as an ironic parody of collectible card culture. The concept was influential enough to directly inspire the "Rare Pepe Wallet" project on the Counterparty blockchain in 2016, one of the earliest NFT-style collectible experiments, years before "NFT" was mainstream vocabulary.
