Per Wikipedia, the character first appeared in 1999 in Glanni Glaepur i Latabae and last in 2014. A line from his song "You Are a Pirate" became a meme from 2007, and around 2016 he gained fame through "We Are Number One"; r/dankmemes voted him Meme of the Year for 2016. The role was played by Stefan Karl Stefansson, who died in 2018.
