REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"The lighting in this indie horror game is giving full Salad Fingers."

LORE & ORIGIN

Created by British animator David Firth, partly inspired by a friend's offhand remark about having "salad fingers" while playing guitar. The first episode was posted to Newgrounds in 2004, and it initially got a poor reception before a site moderator featured it on the front page and it caught on.
