Know Your Meme traces it to a 16 February 2021 tweet by @NemmyArty that invented a fictional game character to mock Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans angrily demanding cartoony mascots; it then spread to Instagram, Reddit and fan art. Separately, Tumblr users adopted it in fandom ask memes (alongside blorbo, scrunkly and glup shitto) to mean an underappreciated favourite character, and Urban Dictionary defines it as a lovable character talked about a lot but known mostly to fans. This is closely related to the existing term scrimblo, which covers the Tumblr-fandom sense; scrimblo bimblo is the longer full form, and the Smash joke origin is documented here.
